sea trg 16th dec
16th dec, training for next sea com
venue:SSTC
cadet IC: YiHe (csm played a small role on this occasion)
attendance: part C-6 (csm and PS 'b' included. note:no medic cos he went OBS)
part b- 14 (2 came late,one reported sick)
Clts present: Myself
the poor attendance of the part Cs (according to them) is due to OBS.
4 of the specs who came as instructors today were not present during the previous sea trg ,did not find out how things were done and as a result weren't very aware of how things were supposed to go.For example,Eugene did not know that no safety boat was going to be assigned to us.
The training plan was ill conceived, much of it dictated by Major Lee who requested that they only draw 10 kayaks and train the group in 2 shifts, meaning that there would only be half of the part Bs out at sea at one time. The 'shore' party was left at the briefing area with nothing to do untill i suggested that specs take them to sit near the shore where they could watch the trg and hopefully learn frm their peer's mistakes. The reason for specs not doing so before: lifejackets required for pple on shore.
The Lesson plan was also poor, more of this later.
specialists were not working at full capacity.at one point of time,3 specs were seen guarding the bags while YiHe the instructor was struggling with his lesson .The other 2 specialists were observed on their kayaks a short distance away frm the shore not doing anything when they should be pointing out mistakes.
Training went on untill it was delayed by sailors who cut into our trg space and when some beachbums asked us to cut our training cos they were gonna have a telematch. After seeking permission from major lee,i made them shift their shore of operations toward the SMA side.
Cleaning up was quite smooth, cadets and specs were reasonably efficient although this might be because of their small number.
Oh yea,be careful of this boatman called terence,he will be at KSTC next yr after SSTC is closed. At the end of this trg he gave an uncalled-for lecture to the specs and cadets, this lasted for 30 minutes and he also pumped them during this trg for not meeting his standard of discipline. My opinion of him is that hes bored out of his mind and will do anything for a kick.in case you have not seen or heard of him,he has a dark complexion, wears specs, has a missing front tooth and a silver ring on his fourth finger.
what i think of the specs........
the specialists who turned up dont possess much initiative:
-reuben badgered me to arrange these sea trgs with SSTC instead of showing some independence.( is it okay for specialists to do it themselves?)
-when emergencies like disruption of trg occur, cadets do not try to remedy the situation
-they seem oblivious to eyesores like cadets who are slacking
specs do not work as a team:
-the IC did not detail manpower as best as he could even though he had so little resources
-specs without anything to do did not go and see if their help was needed elsewhere even though its quite clear that they are undermanned.
specs have poor planning skills:
-instructors were unclear about some minor details ,i.e. competition rules....shows that they did not consolidate their info to make sure they dont contradict each other
-instructor did not teach well, quite a few mistakes were not pointed out, this is partly because of the fact that they were understaffed.
-during this trg there was virtually no time keeping at all
