trg 26/8

though i came late, few points i'd like to raise.

1) The part B platoon Sgt, was not with his platoon, or rather, he did not take much charge of his part. when i asked the csm for the part b PS, he could give me an answer on where the part b PS was.

2) Part Cs, on their part, should open their eyes, as in they should be aware of their surroundings. but they did not see other grps of students near the area of operation. They should have spared a thought for other people. imagine if others did the same to us, we would also be unhappy with them.

3) clearing up of logistics, most of the specs were not present or playing around when the log spec was clearing up the logs, with a few volunteers. we must make a point to them that though they are of senior positions, they still have a duty to play in keeping our unit on order, this applies to the clearing up of logistics after training.

ncc forum

this is put up for the benefit of those who nvr attend clt forum on 20 Aug

POINTS FROM CLT Forum 20 AUG 2005

SN Issues Remarks
1 INFORMAL PUNISHMENT
Commandant pointed out that no corporate punishment should be issued on cadets. Units should refer the case to the School to take action on their students.
CLTs felt that corporate punishment is necessary to ensure discipline and gets things done.
HQ NCC is looking to setting up new guidelines on discipline.

2 NCC CCA IN ITE/JC/POLY
CLTs felt that their individual school should recognize their participation in NCC activities.
There should be a person in-charge of the NCC CCA in the ITE/JC/POLY, so that they can obtain permission to attend NCC activities.

3 FRATERNIZATION ISSUES

Commandant strictly forbids fraternization between cadets/CLTs and HQ staff/NSF in or outside campus. Interaction outside of NCC activities is also not allowed.
Personal data(e.g. handphone nos.) needs to be used correctly and for official communication only. There has been a case where SMS was used inappropriately.

4 RETURN OF SERIVICE
Commandant encourages CLTs to provide their services to community work.
E.g. Home visits, organize outings/events for homes…etc

Currently there are activities CLTs can be involved:
1. Army Half Marathon
2. Adopting of Welfare Homes under SEA District
3. Water Ambassdors Programme(NEW) in Sep-Dec
4. Service learning Programme (Nov/Dec) in Singapore

5 SEA DISTRICT STAFF MOVEMENT
2LT Brian Wong been newly posted to NCC Sea District, and has taken over 2LT Tan as Sea District TCO.

Solving AWOL

We should consider introducing movie screenings as part of the prog for trg.
I understand that 4 hrs isn't alot of time so we have to make the best out of it but what i am proposing is that we show them war flicks occasionally, say every few months.
Sometimes,we need to let the cadets take a break from all the serious stuff and showing them some battle is much more military-minded than playing games like basketball or soccer(in which not every cadet takes part in).
Besides,I think by now all of u realise the magic war movies can do for morale. and the cadets could be taught a whole lot more about warfare and its history.Something that isn't emphasised enough in the corps BUT is/was what many of the cadets were expecting.
What say you guys?I already have Full metal jacket, windtalkers and saving pte ryan in my collection, shouldn't be a problem coming up with the flicks,i'm sure the rest of us have a stash too.Besides, showing movies doesn't take a bite out of our budget unlike paintball or expeditions and it can be done more than a few times without cadets getting bored.
And if we do not get clearance to use the audi,we could just loan a classroom, get a laptop with dvd player and some snacks.Although,of course, audi is best.
Hopefully,if we introduce enough of these .... 'war-like' elements (i.e. paintball, wargames, warmovies) and conduct our trainings in a way that they learn stuff outside of the NCC syllabus(which is pitifully steeped in drills, safety, ropework and other 'mundane' trivia) we can make our unit more ARMY than NCC (like what JC and WJ have pointed out).
This could be a major factor in solving AWOLs.

improvement to training

this is an ongoing discussion between JC, TW and me for like 3-4 months liao. til nw, there has being no improvement coz all 3 of us are quite buz with our own commitments lah, so now i put up n ask for all clts' comments lor.

1) REDUCE NO. OF AWOLS -- As u all knoe, the no. of awols even if small if considered quite serious in any unit esp. barracudas. So how to reduce awols? motivate cadets to come for our trainings by making trainings more fun n interesting how?

Proposed solution: Proposing replacing standard training with CIP contributions, out-of-sch training. Frequency would most likely be once a month and strength with be 1 part involved at anytime. Thus even if 1 part is out of the school trg at any time, usual training will still go on. Aim: So that cadets gain more exposure and make training mroe interesting and fun. E.g of out-of-sch training are like paint-balling(pending), IMT practice at SAFRA areas(pending).
Cadets also find it boring if we do the standard training programme like PT den lecture den drills everytime. So we have considered replacing lecture time with someting more meaningful than jus games itself..E.g: akkido or TKD, art of self-defense, can be taught once in a while to make training more interesting. Instructors in this case can be our own clts or ex-NCC members like Kok Yan Rong.

This is the current extent of our discussion now, no doubt there are mani loopholes somewhere, so pls comment.

review of school trg :Aug 12

This is the 3rd training conducted by Part C specialists.
-Total strg : 19 Part C and 32 Part A cadets
1) 1st KOK-up of the day, SRO was updated twice and finalised only on Friday morning. CLTs on duty were informed abt it at the last minute with regards to a change in training programes. -- shows that there is a breakdown or lag in communication.
2a) Poor unit intel -- not all specialists knoe what they supposed to do, unclear about their responsibilities and so on. e.g. CSM and ASM lecturing along with other specialists while their duty is only to oversee and allocate duties.
2b) Poor unit intel -- Specialist lecturer only knoe on Friday morning that most of Part A cadets are going for Learning Journey which ended only at 5pm. Results in the skipping of colours because of insufficent strength to form a parade??? 8 Part A cadets left after the rest went for Learning Journey, SRO is changed again because of Chinese Oral Exams thus PT is cancelled. New training programme, lecture and drills only.
3) Part C attitude -- Part C specialists' attitude are slacking down again except for key-appointment holders, some report for training in sch uniforms and likewise during the training, slack because no duties for them as there were only 8 Part A cadets that were being instructed by 9 Part C specialists, most who were key-appointment holders like CSM himself.

*note: Part B cadets not present because of school event where the whole sec 2 level went for learning journey. The rest of the Part A cadets joined the training only after 5.45pm when they reach school. DO was not present.

Conclusion: Specialists are not clear abt their purpose and what they supposed to do. Responsibilities not fulfilled properly. Poor inter-unit communication between specialists and their men. Poor specialist-to-clts communication. There is initiative but a serious lack of it to gather intel so that each specialist knoe his own part and is updated abt his charges under him. Hence AAR after training was carried out and these problems identified and explained to Part C key appointment holders such that solutions are discussed on the spot itself. e.g. From nw on, 2 copies of the SRO will be sent to the 2 duty clts of the next training. SROs are to be more detailed from now on, with each activity accompanied with explanations on what specialists plan to teach n do. Each specialist are also to plan their own lectures and training programmes and keep a record of it such that duty clts can check from time to time to update themselves on the status of Part A/B cadets' current progress on what they hav learned so far from the specialists teaching them.

solutions`(improved)

with regards to the walkie-talkie issues, i spoken with tw, it's his idea orginally but well since he's too lazy to bring it up, so i jus write it for all to c lah.

speaking abt forking our own money out to purchase the equipment, tw sae that we can get the sch to pay for it given that the sch allocate part of their yearly budget to NCC. The standard policy has alwaes being that, all items purchased in the name of NCC, are to present receipts to reclaim their money frm the sch. Meaning that we are not given our $$ to spend in the start of the year but instead kip in a seperate fund to be used over the whole year and onli redeemed with ani receipts presented. SO tt would mean, ani funds allocated by the sch to us at the end of the year if nt used, is taken back by sch again. THUS, taking for instance, if we use jus 200 bucks this yr when we are given 300 bucks instead den tt yr, the sch will, due to cost-cutting, tink that NCC do not need tt much fund and hence would more or less reduce it to a more appropiate size for NCC = smaller fund. I'm nt saying we CLTs should not fork out the money becoz of personal advantages or wat, but that since the sch has given an extra fund for us to use as barracudas deem fit so y nt utilise it? IT's better den c it go to waste like tt.
Furthermore, it's nt tt we are gona bring the equipment home with us when we are passing out or wat. Coz i tink it will remain for future marist CLTs to use, it would be appropiate to use NCC funds for it. I would like to strongly emphasis that, the above mentioned funds are seperate from the NCC fund we usually have available.
As of now, i assess that what i have written is truefull based on current facts that i have gathered. So aniting wrong pls, enlighten mi, thankx.

solutions`

errr...first of all:

WHO R U?
i mean the one below?
guys nxt time u update, pls leave ur name or someting like ironoxideman, so we knoe who's who.

1) i agree with u abt the consolidating of the $$ for the NCC Day Dinner so JC so it's easier for all of us to do so. But it's kinda of short notice nw, and furthermore, not all marist CLTS check this blog, i'm nt even sure they check their email, dude.
2) JC was the one tt suggest holding the seminar in the SEPT hols, bring the meeting forward to latest 25th of this month will nt, i emphasis on ,certainly, be confirmed. Reasons given tt many of the marist CLTs are engaged in their own activities like cca, studies and so. e.g, kenneth n xuanxuan, sat got cca? not to mention that the rest of the marist clts in JC or CI have long days esp. for a special few like mi? =P So, that lives us with 2 options, using the NCC Day dinner or the SEPT hols.
-Option 1: NCC DAY DINNER
this is the time where all or most of the marist CLTs can mit. BUT the problem is, there are not much free time for us to gather n discuss on wat we nd to plan n do. e.g holding another weijie style meeting for like 1-2hrs straight w/o lifting ur butt off the chair.
-Option 2: SEPT HOLS
one full week of hols, for us to use as we deem fit. i hav no doubt mani of us got programmes lined. Wat mi and JC ask for, is jus 2-3 hrs of ur time for a impt briefing that we can settle once n for all so we can conc on our promos ASAP n spend th rest of ur week, doing wat u deem fit. As u urself had said to xuanxuan, spent more time on NCC, so spare a day wouldn't kill would it? i hope =(
Regarding the agenda of the meeting, i hav said someting abt it in my previous post. We will discuss abt tings that have happened, tings that are happening and tings yet to happen. In short, the past, the present and the future of the Barracudas unit. Since it's a vry general range of issues concerning abt the unit, there's alot of tings we MUST and we WILL sit down to identify n take into consideration. HENCE the purpose of this meeting came into existance.
As u can see, Option 2 sounds better for some reasons?
3) Regarding the use of the NCC funds, i agree with u den. Since we CLTs are the ones using the tings we are purchasing so the funds may as well come out of our own pockets. So i agree with this erhmx..i dunno who's, suggestions.
4) THIS is a vry major point i'm gona raise, JC has served in the Barrcudas as a CLT for like 2 long years, he has done his fair share of hard work n sweated as much blood as he should or more. Like all of us, he can't afford to get stuck at the end of this yr by his promos. HE's a one man army or shall we sae, handling almost every single tings that crop up by his own. JC's quite under stress thou he STUBBORNLY refuses to admit it, his efficency is lagging as he is over-burdened. I would strongly recommend that more marist CLTS step out to at least relieve him of some of his duties be4 we work this man to his death` =X
Guys as u knoe by now.we mus start taking the initative to do tings on our own w/o being asked to..so more or less, start showing actions instead of commenting. I also vry stressed liao, so if aniting happens that concern u and i 4get to contact u, pls 4give mi. Now tt we are all CLTs, understand that it is ur responsibility to find out wat's happening instead of waiting there for news. This time ard, i inform the rest to hand in their 5 dollars to JC on thurs. Nxt time ard, i may nt even knoe or 4get if likewise situation arises again so it's up to each and every of u to maintain the initiative to contact one another. SO let's wake up our BLOODY ideas, okie? wahahahaha =)

btw i'm ruihong..as darh.knight. guys identify urself pls. thankx!

Recommendations

To All:
-NCC day dinner on the 27th of August...kindly arrange to pass $5 and form to JC NG by thurs, 11/8 so that he can submit all for u. dun bother using this to inform him, chances are his HP more effective.

-About the sept seminar or meeting u all have in mind... i strongly recommend u all bring it forward to at latest 25th of this month, reason being september got lotsa time for activities..planning then would be too late, and trg has ALREADI resumed..u should coordinate before goin out again, besides, then would be a great time to study for promos..so dun waste it like tt..bring the date forward guys.

-Regarding the aquisition of walkie talkies... i strongly recommend the use of personal funds..i.e 10 of u share some money..one HF LRT set (5 miles) cost jus under $100. do not use our ncc funds reason being we need it for the part B expedition cum camp or wateva..plus we need to aquire more infrastructure (pace stick for one..cost a blardy $400) besides..clts are the ones whu use it wat..so..shldnt we pae and maintain it..and wateva other initiatives we got, its best to depend as much on ourselves (ouyang, spend less on ur girl, more on ncc pls) so that we dun haf to be answerable for anything.

-Unit tees...JC NG reconfirms tt its been delayed..but ont he wae..so tt one is more or less done..CLT shirts...long overdue...pls encourage wateva needs be to be accomplished...

Issues

1. we are going to have a conference btwn all the mshs clts during sep hols. Can we quickly decide on the agenda of the seminar then? i think this should be left to J.C. as he knows what to do.

2. i'm quite sorry that i don't have much time to go down for trainings, as my lessons always end arnd 1640 every friday. so if there is a chance, i would go down. please pardon my absence from school trainings. to the rest that goes down to supervise trainings, thanks for the effort.

3. regarding training itself, we let the specs run the show. let them teach and let them undertake those roles they are given. we are there to help them spot their own mistakes, so try to maintain a distance btwn yourself and the specs. note down their mistakes and tell them after training. i think all these you all already should know.

4. if we are to carry out training ourselves, i suggest taking the part Cs, and part Bs as priority. these two parts are of more senior ranks, so it is essential that we instill the correct values and discipline in them first. hence, do not hesistate to make notes abt them.

5. i hope to undertake physical training of the unit after my Promotional exams. J.C, please advice. the reason is not that i have no faith in the current PTI, but i hope to improve their physical fitness SAFELY. i would also like to train a batch of selected cadets in their kayaking skills. i hate to see TKSS getting away with most of the medals. but i do not gurantee success as it depends on the cadets themselves. Again, JC please advice.

thanks.

some minor + minor issues

Guys, we nd to rili work on each update n report we do.

1) alex n hong, maybe u wana update a detailed report on the current status of the CLT shirt or watever? so we hav a rough idea wat's going on?

2) in addition, i recommend each training review be completed with a set of solutions to watever probs the duty clts have identified.

3) as of after the ncc day parade, i hav being calling 4 a marist clts meeting for some impt briefing to be carried out, to let u all knoe, it's supposed to sort of like the NCC seminar, we discuss tings to be carried out, that have been carried out and are carrying out soon. SO informing all marist clts, kip ur Sept hols FREE, coz one of these days will be the meeting. i will discuss with JC n kip ya updated.

4) THIS blog is supposedly to be TOP-SECRET n exclusively to marist clts. As alex had said, so limit the no. of pple tt knoe abt this blog. All are welcome to tag this blog..wahaha.

pS to xuanxuan*: u r welcome to bring ya ger along. Jus kip yaself free when we gather during the dinner. if i'm nt wrong, JC wants to sae someting to us? hah

Friday, August 05, 2005

some minor issues.

1) Unit Ts, i think we owe the part bs their unit t for a long time. so yeah, can we quickly print those shirts.

2) Trg. its their first few times conducting trgs. a few mistakes are pardonable. we just have to make sure they are not repeated again.

3) we need to make the trg more hiong. but at the same time, safer. i think that we have to make it a major point.

oh yeah, i will be going NCC dinner. can bring spouse along ah? haha.

review of school trg :Aug 5

This is the 2nd training conducted by the new batch of specialists.
Specs were not strict enough but seemed quite confident and capable of carrying out their tasks.
No teacher officers were present and the SRO was not put up.Admin spec had to call up the cadets to inform them about trg.
There are some unutilised items lying around the ncc room, e.g. the vanguard sheets on the table. If stored away, the additional space in the NCC room can be better made used of.

some glitches in trg:specs left dummy rifles lying around outside the multi purpose court without anybody to watch over them.

-Chow

Discussion by Mike,Hong,Chow

-purchase of walkie talkies to improve communication during trgs
-purchase of toy m-16s to be dropped(due to walkie talkies)
-standard issue of ncc handbook and unit t-shirt for all new cadets
-compiling of NCC teaching materials for CLTs (a new handy handbook for us,we have to upgrade and standardise our knowledge of the syllabus)
-new documents to be made: a detailed recording of the schedule of camp, its activities and training grounds as well as logistics. This will serve as a reference for next year's camps

any queries, forward to Mike,Hong or Chow
